If your club is interested please communicate directly with the writer: After a lot of trouble trying to get a reasonable venue in Berlin, we are glad to announce that the 13th Berlin Open will take place in 2008 and the best is that we are back on the lovely Maifeld. To complete our highly international field we would like to invite a team from Australia (club team, mixed team, national team). Lacrosse Australia Announcement | 13 August 2007
Youth Development Team planned for 2008 Lacrosse Australia is considering entering a team in an under age World Youth Invitational Tournament proposed to be held in Vancouver, Canada during the 2008 U19 World Championships. In an extension of the successful Talent Identification Program (TIP) introduced several years ago, which culminates in those players now preparing for selection to the 2008 U19 Australian team, we are proposing a similar exercise where our young players have a chance to register and be considered for selection in this team to compete in Canada. The age group being considered is players born after 31st August 1992, who will be eligible to play for Australia in the next U19 World Championships in 2012. It must be clearly understood that if this proposal goes ahead, there is no guarantee that members of this team will be automatic selections for the 2012 team. The 2012 team will be selected as per the normal processes in place. Lacrosse Australia has appointed Mr Trevor Stevens to the position of Executive Director for this proposed team, and Trevor has begun working on the various activities required to ensure that, if the minimum criteria is met, the tour goes ahead. Trevor is not new to this role, having been involved in administration and management of under age Australian teams in the past. Trevor will be surveying the lacrosse community shortly, to ascertain the level of interest from players and their parents, and selection is planned to take place at the forthcoming 2007 U15 Tournament in Adelaide in October. Parental approval will be required with registration. As mentioned above, this is a proposal, and progressing this project will be subject to a range of criteria including the following:
Players, coaches and managers interested in registering their interest in this proposed venture can contact: Trevor Stevens Please direct any other enquiries in relation to this announcement to Lacrosse Australia Director, Mr Allan Frederick, in the first instance on 08 8238 5061 (w) or 0418 834 510 (mob), or by email at: allan.frederick@leicon.com.au Allan Frederick
Australia will compete in the 2010 ILF World Lacrosse Championships in Manchester, England. Following a process of advertising, interviewing and consideration of the position of Executive Director for this 2010 team, Lacrosse Australia is pleased to announce that the successful applicant, Keith Chamberlain from Victoria, has been appointed to the position. Keith is not new to this role, having been involved in administration and management of clubs, state and Australian teams in the past. Whilst he remains in charge of the 2008 U19 team until this time next year, many of the early works, initiatives and program set up for the 2010 team will be a duplicate of what he has been doing over the past few years. Keith’s first task will be to consider a team business plan, coaching management structure etc, and to work with the board of Lacrosse Australia to fine tune a structure that will deliver the best result possible. On behalf of the board of Lacrosse Australia, I wish Keith all the best and look forward to the developments of this team over the next three years. Any enquiries in relation to this announcement should be directed to the Lacrosse Australia Director, Mr Allan Frederick, in the first instance on (08) 8238 5061 (w) or 0418 834 510 (mob), or by email at: allan.frederick@leicon.com.au Allan Frederick

My name is Brandon Mapes, I'm a former US collegiate lacrosse player. (2001-2004) Since August of 2004 I've been coaching and playing lacrosse in London, England. While in England my coaching responsibilities have included coaching primary schools, women's lacrosse teams, as well as numerous men's teams. I understand there may be some opportunities for US players to either play or coach lacrosse in Australia. I am very interested in any prospects to be involved with lacrosse in Australia in any way. Please contact me directly if there are any lacrosse clubs or organizations in your region that may have positions available. Thank you,
1322 July, 2006 International Lacrosse Federation President Tom Hayes announced that London, Ontario, Canada has been designated as the site for the ILF 2006 World Lacrosse Championship. The ninth ILF Senior Championships will be conducted in late June and/or early July of 2006. A new tournament format was announced in 2003 due to the expansion of international lacrosse. Consequently, the ILF expects more than 20 countries to be involved in 2006. The ILF will return to Canada for the first time since 1986 (Toronto), and will conduct field lacrosse world championships on Canadian soil for the third time. The first world championship tournament was also staged in Toronto in 1967. The 2002 Championships were hosted by Australia with the USA winning their seventh ILF Senior Title.
2006 Australian Indoor Lacrosse Tournament cancelled Due to lack of local and interstate availability for January, this tournament has unfortunately been postponed. One of the goals of the proposed indoor tournament was to gauge interest and begin the processes involved with developing a competitive Australian indoor team for the next World Indoor Lacrosse Championship (WILC). The next WILC is currently programmed for May 2007 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In order to field a competitive team at the WILC, the Australian team will need to be picked well before May to allow for adequate preparation. Lacrosse Australia has appointed Graeme Reddaway as the Director for Indoor Lacrosse Competition, thus Graeme needs the vocal and obvious support of the players who wish to get indoor lacrosse up and running again within Australia. Once the field 2006 World Championships are completed, development of the indoor game in preparation for the next major world lacrosse event should be Indoor Lacrosse, and the more visible the support from the players, the more Graeme will be able to move the game toward being a conscious priority for the lacrosse fraternity in Australia. If you are interested in being involved please contact Lacrosse Australia Director Graeme Reddaway graeme@reddas.com.au
This new USA Lacrosse Coaching publication could be of interest to you as a lacrosse coach. If you believe it is a useful resource you may wish to let your lacrosse friends and club coaches know of its existence. Dear Lacrosse coaching colleague, Please enjoy a complimentary full copy of the new Lacrosse Coach newsletter. The December issue is online now at: www.laxpower.com/common/December05LacrosseCoachNewsLetter.pdf (2.5MB, PDF). Lacrosse Coach is a new venture in the field of lacrosse, a coaching newsletter. While the concept is not new to sports (football and basketball have had them for years), the lacrosse coaching community has not enjoyed the benefit of receiving a timely publication dedicated to the professional development of the game of lacrosse. Lacrosse Coach is just that, a newsletter for lacrosse coaches. Each of the four yearly issues will feature aspects about coaching the game of lacrosse: practice planning, EMO, MDD, offenses, defenses, special situations, and more. Lacrosse Coach is published by a coach with 28 years of experience, who, like many lacrosse coaches, was frustrated that the lacrosse community did not have a publication dedicated to the needs and development of coaches. Author of over 12 articles in Scholastic Coach and Athletic Director about lacrosse and the author of the US Lacrosse published Men's Drill Manual, Lacrosse Coach publisher John Kenney knows both the game and the lacrosse coaching community. The December 2005 issue of Lacrosse Coach is free; just use the link above to view it in PDF format. The newsletter will be published in December, February, March, and April, and a single-year e-mail subscription is $18.95. To subscribe and receive future issues, send a check or money order to: Lacrosse Coach If you are interested in receiving a one-year subscription or in publishing an article or sponsoring ad space, please get in touch with John Kenney by phone (248-225-2536) or email jmklax@aol.com We are also online at: www.lacrossecoach.org Lacrosse Coach looks forward to answering your questions and meeting your lacrosse coaching needs.

New Zealand calling.... The following comes from Mark Freemon, Executive Director, New Zealand Lacrosse Association. New Zealand is preparing for the 2006 World Championships and is inviting teams from Australia to visit and play against as part of their campaign. If your club is interested in a tour to New Zealand then be quick in responding to Mark. It's a great opportunity for club members and I'm sure the New Zealanders will ensure everyone has a terrific time. The New Zealand team has been training and after what will feel as if just a few short months running past, we'll be jetting to Canadathe year seems to go much faster when you have a WORLD CUP to prepare for. I am keen to organize a squad or two to come over from Oz for a weekend of games. It would be a chance for our guys to have some warm up as a team and also to promote some cross Tasman interaction. As we are still in the developmental stages of our game, we'd like to find suitable competition. However, saying that, we'd welcome any team from your side of the water. ...... Decent flight rates from Oz to Auckland pop up on a semi- regular basis. Timeframebest suited around end of March, early April, 2006 (this is the end of our summer season and has best weather and no real conflicts on our calendar). Even though we are looking well into the future, I'd like to get the ball rolling and would appreciate if you could send me some contacts or email this request on to any parties who you may feel would be keen. Our guys need to save as much cash to go to Canada as is possible so an in-country TOUR is imperative for us. Mark Freemon

These updated rules appear on the LA website in 'Rules of Lacrosse'.

Hello I am Toby Martlew and I am captain of University of Wales - Aberystwyth Mens Lacrosse Club (UK) and am trying to organise a tour for the summer of 2006 (English summer) for my Lacrosse club. We are a small(ish) University side with a lot of fairly inexperienced but highly enthusiastic players, we most probably due to our graduate network, will bring a number of graduates who continue to play lacrosse. It has proved extremely difficult to organise a tour of the UK so I have resolved to look further afield. Any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated. Regards
2006 Australian Mens Lacrosse Team Squad Announcement Australian Squad 2006 (MWord doc, 40KB) The 2006 Australian Lacrosse Team Squad was announced following the final of the Australian Lacrosse League (ALL) in Melbourne. The coaching team selected two squads. The gold squad (selected from ALL players that had a significant influence on the performance of their team and/or displayed individual qualities identified as requirements for 2006) and the green squad (all other identified ALL players/overseas players/injured players and non-ALL players of interest) Those players selected are invited to continue the selection process for the Australian Lacrosse Team to travel to Ontario Canada in 2006. Individuals selected in the squads should seriously consider the financial and personnel commitments required to achieve final team selection. This will include possibly 2 training camps in 2005, a 3rd in 2006 and a pre-tournament camp in the US as well as a commitment to the 2005 ALL Championship. The initial stage of the program will be fitness testing to occur on Saturday 27th or Sunday 28th of November in SA, Vic and WA and is a requirement for those wishing to pursue selection. Squad members will be contacted personally with further details regarding the fitness testing in each state. They will receive information during this session that will consist of the Strength and Conditioning program and administrative forms to be completed and returned in order to pursue the selection process. As the program evolves some of the information above may change. This will be relayed to members via a web site or mail/email. Each state will hopefully have a management and coaching representative to assist in the program. Should you require further information regarding the 2006 Australian Lacrosse Team please contact me at your convenience. Regards
Australian Lacrosse League DVDs and Videos DVDs and videos are now available of the full range of games conducted in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth as part of the inaugural Australian Lacrosse League, plus the Final in Melbourne. Download the Order Form. (PDF, 72KB) There is also an opportunity to purchase the highlights package of all the games. Make sure to get your order in early. This Lacrosse Australia announcement relates to national events in 2005, specifically Under 17s and Under 19s, read the latest news and appointments... 2005 Under 17 - Tournament 4th July 2005 in Melbourne - Victoria Lacrosse Victoria has accepted Lacrosse Australias invitation to hold the first combined event. Lacrosse South Australia has been offered the event in 2006. The Championship and Tournament Guidelines used currently will remain with minor alterations. All competing states are encouraged (this is not a rule) to pick individuals for their correct under age group, allowing the respective underage coaches to have first call on the player. This will also allow others to play in their own age groups so that all players get a chance to experience Lacrosse at this level. U-13s should not play U-15s in front of a 15 or 14 year old. There are exceptional players that can be brought on earlier, but we should understand that in doing this we are depriving that player and his regular mates from the opportunity to play together in their age group. This separation based on talent comes very quickly after graduation into senior ranks, and is one of the highest contributors to the loss of young players to our sport. Our aim is to have as many people experience (players, officials and administrators) this level of competition as is possible. 2005 U-17 and U-19 - Event Executive Director appointed Lacrosse Australia also wishes to recognise and thank Mr Alec Ingles for his efforts in the role of Event Executive Director for the senior nationals for a great number of years. Always there and quick with the right advice when needed. A job well-done Alec and again please accept Lacrosse Australias thanks for your contribution. Gary Mortimer
Lacrosse Australia Announcement Lacrosse Australia: 10 Year Plan of Proposed Australian Team Activities Lacrosse Australia introduced a 10 year plan of proposed Australian Team activities in June 2003, for both Youth and Senior teams. The opportunity therefore exists for future players, coaches and administrators to plan to become exposed and to be involved in national teams in the future. Lacrosse Australia encourages you to enquire about planning your future. Following the successful running of the inaugural Asia Pacific Tournament in South Australia in 2004, the Asia Pacific Lacrosse Union has been formed. It has now been agreed to hold this tournament every two years. In addition, the formation of Lacrosse Australia’s talent identification and academy programs has prompted the consideration of under age tours to the US/Canada to prepare our youth for World Championships. As a result of these initiatives and changes, the following 10 year plan has been revised. For further information, contact undersigned at Lacrosse Australia. Allan Frederick

In 2003 The Western Australian Lacrosse Association nominated Mavis Owens for the May Campbell Service to Sport Award which is presented each year as one of the WA Sports Star of the Year Awards conducted by the WA Sports Federation. Mavis was selected as the winner of that award. The WA Sports Federation was so impressed by her nomination for that award that they decided to nominate Mavis for the Citizen of the Year Award in the category of Sport. This is one of nine Citizen of the Year Awards presented annually the others being Arts, Culture & Entertainment, Community Service, Gold Swan Award (for a voluntary service organisation), Governor’s Award for Regional Development, Industry & Commerce, Syd Donovan Youth Arts Award, The Professions and Youth. These awards are the most prestigious presented in WA and recognise outstanding active citizenship. On 1 June 2004, at the Citizen of the Year Awards Dinner held at the Burswood Grand Ballroom, Mavis Owens was announced by the Governor of Western Australia as the Citizen of the Year in the category of Sport. Mavis received a framed certificate, a trophy (sculpture of a swan), a medal and is now authorised to use the initials “Cit WA” after her name. Lacrosse can join with Mavis in celebrating this great recognition of her terrific contribution to sport over many years, and to lacrosse in particular for some 20 years.

The Club Development Network is a free, Web based program that supports the development and management capacity of sporting clubs and organisations. The aim of the Network is to assist clubs across Australia to identify ways in which they can develop their clubs so they can provide the best possible service to their members. The principle upon which the network has been established is one of promoting continuous improvement. To be a successful, well-run club you need a clear understanding of leadership, planning, people and organisational performance while maintaining a strong member focus. These areas are emphasised in the Club Development Network. Lacrosse Australia's member number is PW6512. The 1907 Canadian Lacrosse Tour of Australia The Lacrosse Australia Historian, Doug Fox, has advised that the Society for Canadian Lacrosse Research has uploaded an essay about the 1907 Canadian Tour to Australia www.geocities.com/lacrosseresearch/publications.html. It's interesting reading and quite funny in parts the Canadians were on tour for approximately 13 weeks in total, with six weeks of those travelling by boat!
The first Down Under Lacrosse Camp conducted Dec 6/7 has been most successful with more than 100 participants taking part and everyone having a great time. Check out the photos at: Saturday || Sunday morning || Sunday afternoon
Help for Canadian player heading to Australia
Hello, my name is Dean Casey. I'm from Canada and will be moving to Australia around next March. I am an avid Lacrosse player and was curious as to when your leagues run and the skill level of them. I play both Box and Field and have attended both Box and Field Nationals here in Canada. I also have coached for about 4 years. I heard that some of the teams will help international players find housing and work, if so what teams would that be, or who should I contact about that.

Important changes to drug rules The following was recently received from the Australian Sports Drug Agency (ASDA). Please take careful note of this in conjunction with the recent notice concerning SALBUTAMOL. Athletes who may be affected by these decisions include those who are, or may be, involved in a STATE or NATIONAL Team or training squad. If you wish to use an approved asthma inhaler it must be declared in writing prior to the competition to the relevant medical authority. Lacrosse Australia have determined that this can be achieved by the following procedure: A certificate from your registered medical practitioner submitted to the Lacrosse Australia Director of Competitions, Peter Hobbs. The certificate should be submitted through your State Association or the Executive Director of the Australian Team. A new asthma medication has come on to the market called Foradile. Foradile (eformoterol fumarate) is a long-acting beta-2 agonist which acts similarly to another asthma medication, salmeterol. Foradile is prohibited in sport by the International Olympic Committee and there are no exemptions for its use. Salbutamol, terbutaline and salmeterol are the only beta-2 agonist asthma medications which are permitted by the International Olympic Committee (in inhaler form only and if declared in writing prior to the competition to the- relevant medical authority). It is important that athletes are aware that Foradile CANNOT be used in elite sport. Please distribute this information to your athletes, coaches, sports doctors etc in any newsletters or mailouts your sport is conducting in the immediate future. For further information on the use of beta-2 agonists in sport please call the Drugs in Sport Hotline on 1800 020 506.
Changes in Prohibited Classes of Substances If you have any concerns relating to the use of Salbutamol, or any other substance, you should refer to your coach and / or State Association. In particular any player trying out for the Australian Team and who uses Salbutamol, or other substance, should discuss the matter with the team Executive Director. Remember that prohibited substances are not limited to prescription medicines.
